Transmission Pulleys

For high performance applications we have lightweight aluminum alloy pulleys and for long life durability we offer steel pulleys. Both types are American made by the same kind of CNC gear cutting machines that make our gears and shafts. All Big Twins with belt drive from 1985-up have a 32 tooth transmission pulley.

Changing to a different pulley with more or less teeth will change two performance attributes of your American machine: rear wheel torque and cruising RPM. Increasing rear wheel torque will increase acceleration. Installing a pulley with more than 32 teeth will decrease your acceleration through the gears and decrease your cruising RPM. Installing a pulley with less than 32 teeth will increase your acceleration through the gears and it will also increase your cruising RPM. This is called engineering compromise; to get one thing, you have to give up another.

However, Our BAKER 6-Speed Overdrive allows you to ‘cheat’ engineering compromise. It is common for our customers to install a 30 tooth pulley when they install our 6-Speed Overdrive. This gives them a 7% increase in rear wheel torque and an 8% lower cruising RPM on the highway. It is truly the best of both worlds for your American V-Twin.

Note: Pulley changes may require a belt change. This depends on 1) where your axle adjustment currently is and 2) the pulley that you are changing to (# of teeth).

aluminum alloy race pulleys

BAKER race pulleys are the lightest pulleys available. A stock 32-tooth Harley pulley weighs 5.2 lbs and our 32-tooth race pulley weights 2.0 lbs; a 61% weight savings. This weight difference means much less ‘flywheel effect’ and allows your engine to rev quicker. Absolutely required for performance applications. Race pulleys are hard anodized for wear resistance and corrosion protection.

steel long life pulleys

These pulleys are made from a solid chunk of steel and are 23% lighter than the stock cast iron piece. We recommend long life pulleys for performance applications where 100,000 mile+ pulley life is required. Designed for long distance touring applications with mild to moderate engine performance upgrades.

30-tooth or 31-tooth h-d® 2006-up cruise drive™ pulleys

Get more oomph from a throttle-wick on your 2007 stock Harley-Davidson FL. Our 30-Tooth or 31-Tooth transmission pulleys effectively ‘gear down’ the bike to optimize the performance in two major ways.

First, you’ll get more torque and power from the take-off gears. This remedies the common criticism of the new bikes being a little sluggish off the line for some riders.

Second, you can utilize the 6th gear at a slower, more reasonable highway speed for a more comfortable RPM. These pulleys bring the cruising gears down a notch for finessing your ride.

Performance details are as follow:

  • Increase Rear Wheel Torque (30T- 7% Increase / 31T- 3% Increase)
  • Cruising RPM 6th gear (75MPH) 30T @ 2830 / 31T @ 2756
  • No more lugging the motor in 6th gear at lower cruising speeds (60-70 MPH)

Note: Will require the use of a 1 tooth shorter belt (For example: H-D p/n 40056-07 is for FL) 2 ¼” special Pulley nut socket required for replacement available from Baker Drivetrain. p/n 94660-07BD
