Drivetrain Authority means mastery beyond the transmission. The transmission is just the scariest system for most people that we happen to have complete command over. Drivetrain Authority means we multiply torque everywhere and anywhere behind the motor to get the results we want. This includes the primary!
shown with torquebox and firestarter (available separately).
A new member in the BAKER Function Formed family, the FFP is designed for your Softail! How do we re-invent the ubiquitous belt drive and make it better?
The answer is stainless steel, baby. Pricey? You bet. Does it work? Hell ya. Specifically, the problem we wanted to address with all belt drives out there was the nasty problem of the aluminum pulleys wearing with the resultant saggy belt syndrome. Modern belts are tough and they will sodomize an aluminum pulley real quick, even if it is hard anodized.
Next, improvements needed to be made in the clutch rattle department. Ever see a nice looking custom approach you and then the rider pulls in the clutch and you hear that god awful rattling sound like all the valve tappets collapsed? That’s clutch rattle. With our rigid stainless steel pulley/basket, clutch rattle noise was reduced to an industry minimum.
We selected the 14mm tooth belt over the conventional 8mm because
it has more torque capacity. The belt width is 2.4” and is overkill for torque capacity. The motor plate, dog bone, side shield, and pulley caps are billet 6061-T6 aluminum.
Stainless steel pulleys provide added durability.
Includes a BAKER 2.4" wide belt, with 14mm tooth profile for added strength vs. the average competitors size of a mere 8mm.
Outer bearing support ties the crank shaft and main shaft together and to the inner motor plate for three times the stability.
Belt is made with a proprietary profile for a contour that provides full tooth contact.
We’ve been making transmission pulleys for years, both aluminum and steel. In short, the teeth on the aluminum pulleys never hold up with miles. Deformed aluminum pulley teeth will lead to saggy belts. Saggy belts and saggy tits are not a good look. For a bike that gets ridden, steel is the only way to go as it relates to the belt running hard against the front and rear pulley teeth.
Steel is also the material of choice for the clutch basket. When a bike is launched hard, the clutch plates aggressively spank the reciprocal flanks on the clutch basket. Reference the competitor’s aluminum clutch basket on the bottom left of this page. Deformed aluminum flanks will lead to increased clutch rattle noise, grabby clutch engagement, and hard shifting.
Motor plate and edge guard are made of 6061-T6 plate stock. Pulley caps and dog bone are made of 6061-T6 forgings.
